Their job is to create artwork that inspires and informs the look of the visual effects in a TV show or film. This might include all manner of designs for characters, creatures, environments, buildings, vehicles, and other prop objects.
VFX production supervisors are responsible for managing the whole VFX project and pipeline, including all the VFX artists. They are the main point of liaison between a VFX company and a film director or producer.
This is an entry-level position in the VFX and games industry but a very important one. Their job is foundational as they have to collect data in and around a live-action scene to help the process of creating a VFX scene.
Modelling artists will create characters, vehicles, weapons, buildings, environments, or any other objects necessary to create a VFX scene. They work with the concept artists following a brief and create 3D models, and they use reference photography or line drawings to create wireframe mesh models in software like Maya.
Responsible for giving movement to characters or moving objects, or vehicles in a scene. They do this by ‘rigging’ character bodies or faces and using keyframe animation to imbue them with life.
Compositors are the last link in the chain of the VFX pipeline and are responsible for putting VFX shots together from all the various assets collected or created, such as 3D CGI elements, live-action footage, or even matte paintings. They use specialist software such as After Effects, Houdini or Nuke.
