Our Game Art & Design course teaches industry-specific skills using tools like Photoshop, Illustrator, Blender, Maya, and 3DS Max. You’ll master techniques in 2D game design, sprite animation, and 3D modelling, creating stylised game-ready assets and animating characters. The course also focuses on traditional art techniques, character anatomy, and narrative design. As you progress, you’ll refine your portfolio, explore professional pathways, and be prepared for freelance, employment, further training, or higher education opportunities.

  • Creative Software Mastery: Gain hands-on experience with professional tools like Photoshop, Illustrator, Blender, Maya, and 3DS Max to create stunning game art and assets.
  • Art Techniques: Develop skills in texture studies, traditional art mediums, and character anatomy to enhance your designs.
  • 2D Game Design: Learn to create 2D games, design game elements, and animate sprites.
  • 3D Modelling & Character Animation: Build stylised 3D assets and animate characters, mastering techniques like anatomy modelling and retopology.
  • Career Guidance: Learn about career opportunities, including freelance work, employment, or further study.

On our L3 Games Art course, you’ll explore your creativity using professional-grade software such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Blender, Maya, and 3DS Max, alongside the Adobe Creative Suite. You’ll refine traditional art skills in dedicated spaces equipped with essential materials, building a strong foundation in art fundamentals. Additionally, you’ll gain practical experience in our games labs, working with industry-standard PCs to develop your technical and artistic capabilities. This course prepares you for the competitive games art industry with a balance of creative and technical expertise.

In college, you’ll also have access to:

  • Games Labs containing gaming PCs.
  • Graphic tablets.
  • Students on this course are assigned an Adobe Creative Cloud licence with access to all applications except Substance. Each licence enables students to register two devices.
  • Traditional art materials.
  • 3D Printer.
  • Meta Quest VR Headsets.
  • Variety of games software (Unreal Engine, Quixel Suite, Unity, Construct 3).

You will benefit from a balanced programme of study that combines practical sessions in specialist spaces with contextual studies in classrooms. In most courses, you will share some lessons with peers from different pathways, allowing you to rub shoulders and collaborate!

  • 13 hours of in-person lessons per week, covering a range of topics in your discipline.
  • 56 hours of self-directed study (independent learning) over the year.
  • 64 hours of enrichment activities throughout the year.
  • Time dedicated to employability skills development through the Professional Development programme.
  • Additional 4 hours of maths and/or 3 hours of English weekly for students with grade 3 or below.

Year 2:

  • 12 hours of in-person lessons per week.
  • 111 hours of self-directed study over the year.
  • 48 hours of enrichment activities.
  • Continued focus on employability development.

4 GCSEs at 9-4 (A*-C), including English.

This internally assessed course is delivered and evaluated by teachers through planned projects. These combine practical tasks, like game design and creation, 3D modelling and animation, as well as written reports, filmed pitches, and presentations, involving both individual and group work.

Our bespoke professional development programme aims to empower you to take your next steps into your future career. We achieve this by providing you with a three phase programme of lessons, projects and experiences designed to give you as much exposure to industry as possible.

Those who need to retake maths and/or English due to achieving a grade 3 or below will undertake 4 hours of maths and/or 3 hours of English a week. Learn more here.
